- Pipe and duct insulation. Often a white or grey wrap that looks like chalky paper or corrugated cardboard around old pipes. On boilers and fittings you may see a plaster-like coating, sometimes cracked or flaking with age.
- Block and board insulation. Hard, rigid panels used around furnaces, boilers, and ductwork to hold back heat.
For comparison, the materials that are usually safe look different. Modern fiberglass is fluffy and pink or yellow. Cellulose insulation looks like grey, shredded paper. Neither of those is asbestos, though to an untrained eye, old cellulose and loose-fill asbestos can be easy to confuse. When in doubt, treat it as a suspect.
You Cannot Confirm It Just by Looking
Asbestos fibers are microscopic, so even a trained inspector cannot give you a guaranteed answer from across the room. So what makes it dangerous is disturbance. Walking through it, vacuuming it, renovating around it, or tearing into it during a demolition can all stir up fibers.
