Pool Removal FAQ
What's the difference between partial and full pool removal?
Partial removal (also called break-and-fill or abandon-in-place) involves breaking the top of the pool walls into the basin, drilling drainage holes through the bottom, and filling the area with compacted material. Faster and cheaper, but may require disclosure to future buyers. Full removal demolishes and hauls off the entire pool shell, then backfills with clean engineered fill. More expensive but produces a fully restored yard with no disclosure requirement and allows you to build over the area in the future.
Do I need a permit to remove a swimming pool in Georgia?
Yes, in nearly every case. Most Georgia counties and cities require a demolition permit before removing a swimming pool, plus utility disconnect coordination for plumbing and electrical. Some HOAs also have specific requirements. We handle the permit application, utility coordination, and final inspection sign-off as part of the project.
How long does pool removal take?
A partial in-ground pool removal typically takes 2 to 4 days including backfill and basic grading. A full in-ground pool removal usually runs 4 to 7 days depending on pool size and site access. Above-ground pool removal is usually completed in one day. Pool deck removal and full site restoration may add 1 to 2 additional days.
Will pool removal affect my home's value or insurance?
Often positively. Many home buyers see pools as a liability rather than an asset, especially families with young children and buyers in cooler climates. Removing a pool can make your home easier to sell and reduce your insurance premiums by eliminating the liability. Full removals have no disclosure requirement. Partial removals require disclosure to future buyers in Georgia, so we document the work properly for your records.
What happens to the water in my pool?
We handle proper drainage as part of every pool removal. Pool water is drained according to local code, typically to the sanitary sewer system with the proper permit, or treated and released to a permitted discharge point. We coordinate with the local water authority when required. Never pumped into a storm drain or onto a neighbor's property.
Can you remove a fiberglass or vinyl liner pool too?
Yes. We remove every type of in-ground pool including concrete (gunite or shotcrete), fiberglass shell, and vinyl liner pools. Each type has its own removal approach, but the process and pricing are similar. Vinyl liner pools are often the fastest to remove because the liner and steel walls come out quickly.
Will the spot where my pool was always be visible?
Done right, no. Within a season of proper backfill and grading, the area should blend seamlessly with the surrounding yard. We use clean engineered fill compacted in lifts, finish with topsoil, and grade for drainage. With grass seed or sod, most homeowners can't tell where the pool was within a year.
